Respiratory physiotherapy is a subspecialty within physiotherapy focused on preventing, treating and stabilizing breathing dysfunctions or alterations.

What is respiratory physiotherapy?

Respiratory physiotherapy is a specialty dedicated to the prevention, treatment and stabilization of the respiratory system.

The physiotherapist treats the air passages, ribs, pleurae and muscles, among other tissues, in order to improve the patient’s ventilation, using air as a therapeutic element, in a way that helps the respiratory system’s defense mechanisms.

Respiratory physiotherapy does not replace medical treatment, but complements it. In addition to providing the patient with a better quality of life thanks to the prevention of bronchopulmonary diseases and/or complications.

When is it indicated?

In general, it is applied in situations that cause an increase in secretions, an alteration of the ventilatory mechanics of the thoracic cage and/or a deficit in the bronchial clearance mechanisms.

Increased mucus, expectoration or not, increased persistent coughing, snoring or breathing sounds and some other related symptoms can serve as a guide for us to resort to physical therapy.

At Bwell Clinic we have a great team of specialists, including Berta Portales, a specialist in respiratory physiotherapy.
