What is pediatric osteopathy?

Pediatric osteopathy is a branch of osteopathic medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders in infants, children and adolescents. Pediatric osteopaths use specific gentle manual techniques to promote overall health and wellness in this vulnerable population. His holistic approach considers the interconnection between body structure, function and the patient’s overall health status.

What does a pediatric osteopathic physical therapist treat?

A pediatric osteopathic physical therapist treats a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and health problems in infants, children and adolescents.
This includes problems such as infant colic, breastfeeding difficulties, cranial asymmetries, sleep disorders, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems, scoliosis, sports injuries, and neuromotor development disorders, among others.

Using specialized manual techniques adapted to the patient’s age, pediatric osteopathic physical therapists seek to restore balance and optimal body function, thus promoting the child’s healthy development and overall well-being.

What are your objectives?

The objectives of pediatric osteopathy are multiple and are aimed at improving the health and well-being of children in a comprehensive manner. These include:

  • Relieve discomfort and pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Promote normal function and development of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Improve joint mobility and posture.
  • Facilitate the balance of the nervous and hormonal system.
  • Optimize the function of the respiratory and digestive system.
  • Support the immune system for better resistance to disease.
  • Prevent future injuries and health problems by early identification and correction of imbalances and dysfunctions.

Why is osteopathy recommended at such an early age?

Osteopathy is recommended at an early age because children are especially receptive to manual therapy and have a great capacity for recovery. During the first years of life, the body undergoes rapid growth and development, which can lead to musculoskeletal imbalances and dysfunction. Pediatric osteopathy can effectively address these problems, helping to correct them before they become long-term chronic problems. In addition, many common childhood conditions, such as infant colic, breastfeeding difficulties and cranial asymmetries, can benefit greatly from osteopathic intervention. By receiving treatment at an early stage, children can experience a significant improvement in their quality of life and prevent future complications.

Where do they usually occur?

Pediatric osteopathic treatments are usually performed in specialized osteopathic or physical therapy offices, where practitioners are trained and equipped to treat children of all ages.
These clinics are usually designed to create a comfortable and child-friendly environment, with facilities and equipment adapted to children’s needs. Parents often accompany their children during treatment sessions, allowing them to participate in the process and better understand the therapist’s recommendations.
In addition, some pediatric osteopathic physical therapists also offer in-home services, which may be convenient for families with young children or special mobility needs. It is important to choose a professional with experience and specific training in pediatric osteopathy to ensure the safety and efficacy of the treatment for the child.

Is it dangerous to go to an osteopath?

We often hear the question: is it dangerous to go to an osteopath? And the truth is that we are not surprised, given that the subject has been discussed in different media, in addition to the fact that delicate body parts are handled. However, it is not necessarily dangerous.

Osteopathy focuses on the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and other health problems using manual techniques. When performed by a qualified and experienced osteopath, osteopathy is safe and effective. However, as with any form of medical treatment, there are certain potential risks, such as allergic reactions, minor injuries or temporary exacerbation of symptoms. It is important to choose an osteopath with the right training, at Bwell all osteopaths are physiotherapists, i.e. they have health training,  and many years of experience.

The cranial and visceral techniques are very soft and harmless, the ones that can carry a risk are the high speed manipulative techniques, however, well performed and with previous tests they are totally safe, although we emphasize again the importance of putting yourself in the hands of osteopaths who are health professionals as is the case of all Bwell’s professionals. We also emphasize the importance of a good anamnesis, i.e. that the professional asks you the relevant health questions prior to treatment, be wary of a center where you lie on the stretcher without first conducting an in-depth interview to really know your medical history.

As for the safety of pediatric osteopathy we should not worry, as no high speed manipulations are performed on babies and all manual techniques performed on the baby are very gentle and again performed by a health professional, physiotherapist and osteopath.

Conclusion

Pediatric osteopathy offers a safe and effective alternative to address a variety of musculoskeletal and health conditions in children and adolescents. Using a holistic approach and gentle manual techniques, pediatric osteopathic physical therapists work to promote healthy development and overall wellness from an early age. By seeking treatment early and working with a qualified professional, parents can help maximize their child’s health potential and ensure a more active and pain-free future.
